Ngaio Progressive Association
Ngaio Progressive Association (NPA) promotes the interests of the Ngaio and Crofton Downs communities and the natural environment. We work with Wellington City Council and Wellington Regional Council on many issues. NPA is an incorporated society.
The Association started almost 80 years ago and has played an important role in Ngaio throughout the decades. We had a quiet period during the 1970s and 1980s then became very active again.
Viv Chapple is our chairperson.
Monthly Meetings
We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:45 pm in the Drop-in Centre at the Ngaio Town Hall. Residents are more than welcome to attend the meetings. Our committee is elected at an AGM held in October each year. Before this meeting, we deliver an annual report to every household in Ngaio and Crofton Downs.

Our aims are
- to foster a healthy public spirit in Ngaio and Crofton Downs and elsewhere in and about the City of Wellington
- to promote the improvement, beautification and development of Ngaio in particular and in the City in general
- to promote public works and maintenance works anywhere that seems desirable in the interests of residents
- to advocate and by all lawful means to secure efficient administration of municipal affairs
We care about our natural environment
Those of you who live in or have driven through the suburb will have noticed the NGAIO signs. These were erected by NPA and are strategically placed at each approach to the area. We regularly conduct plantings of native flora in public areas. The grasses on the Khandallah road have not only become an icon of our work but also a joy for the many children who love to run their hands through the plants as they walk along the pavement,
We believe that there is a need for continuous community effort to maintain and, where possible, to improve our environment. This includes:
- Protection of the clear hilltop skyline and the grassland and bush on hillsides.
- Protection and enhancement of heritage buildings and sites.
- Protection of streams and creeks and prevention of further unnecessary piping of streams.
- Ensuring that streams are kept clear and free of rubbish and good water quality is maintained.
- Further enhancement of such major assets as Trelissick Park/Ngaio Gorge, the Northern Walkway, Ngaio Gorge Road, Old Porirua Road, Cummings Park, Huntleigh Park and Heke Reserves, especially by new planting of trees and the extension of walkways.
- Stringent controls and eradication of noxious and invasive plants and trees (eg Old Man’s Beard and acacia).
- Support for Council initiatives to control or eradicate threats to native wildlife.
- Reduction of litter on streets and roadsides, including that caused by the rubbish disposal system.
- Protection from undue industrial and technological hazards which pose a potential risk to the health and wellbeing of the community
