We’re working together to enable more service reliability and more people and freight to travel on trains in the future. While the Network is well maintained we are renewing some of the older elements along the Line over the coming months. What’s happening on the Johnsonville Line? From early February 2020 we’re undertaking day-time works during off-peak travel times that include:  Renewing traction power overhead line system between Ngaio and Johnsonville
Happening in several phases we will first do ground investigations, then pile to build new steel mast foundations, then stand the mast before finally installing the new overhead lines.  Replacing sleepers within all seven tunnels
 Undertaking slope stability work around Ngaio Gorge
How this work affects you

Our staff and contractors are mindful of our rail neighbours and will do our best to minimise any disturbance and get this essential work done as quickly and quietly as possible. However, despite their best efforts, this work may cause you some disturbance and we apologise for the inconvenience. For example, there may be noise from machinery and additional vehicles moving around.

Questions or concerns?

As our works move into an area we’ll ensure our neighbours know about our plans via letter drop. To find out more about the upgrade visit: https://www.kiwirail.co.nz/what-wedo/projects/wellington/, or contact our Community Engagement team via wgtnupgrade@kiwirail.co.nz or 0800 801 070 extension 43042.
