Major strengthening is about to start happening in Ngaio Gorge. WCC has updated their plan for this road, more detail available from here.
From late April to the end of May 2019, specialist crews will be carrying out slope stabilising works in the area of the major slip in the lower gorge. They will be surveying the slip zones and carrying out geotechnical investigations to develop geological & survey maps. A topographical survey of the road below will also be completed.
This work will be occurring from 7am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, so there will be delays for traffic passing through the investigation area during working hours. Traffic management will be in place throughout this period.
It is anticipated there will be 5-7 days of road closures during off peak travel times (9am–4pm), starting 29th April. Walking tracks will also be closed during this time.
Unsuitable weather or other unforeseen circumstances may alter the planned start dates.
