The Transport Subgroup – Ngaio Climate Crew

Transport is one of the largest sources of carbon emissions in Aotearoa, but small changes in how we get around can make a big difference. Walking, biking, ride-sharing, or even choosing an e-bike or other electric vehicles all help reduce our climate impact while saving on fuel and parking costs.

Active transport doesn’t just cut emissions; it improves fitness, lowers stress, and helps us feel more connected to our neighbourhood. In Ngaio, we have the chance to make cycling, walking, and shared transport safer, easier, and more appealing, creating a healthier and more connected community for everyone!

Our Community in Action

Earlier this year, the Ngaio Climate Crew hosted a Bike Picnic – a fun, family-friendly ride that showed just how easy and enjoyable cycling around our suburb can be. Neighbours of all ages joined in, riding together to a local spot where we shared food, laughter, and ideas. Events like this are a reminder that active transport isn’t just practical; it can also bring joy and community spirit to everyday life.

We’re also working on local projects to make active transport safer and easier, including:

  • Slower speed limits and more pedestrian crossings
  • “Drive Slowly” signs and speed bumps in key areas
  • Petitions to the council to show community support for safer streets

If you’d like to play a part in making transport in Ngaio safer, healthier, and more sustainable, we’d love to have you in the transport subgroup. Together we can make active travel the easy and enjoyable choice!
