Pictured – Brett Reid and Kena Duignan of Ngaio Climate Club. Lovely sunny morning in Ngaio on 10 May 2025. We had choice conversations with whānau at the awesome Ngaio Toy Library! And a big shout out to the Ngaio Toy Library – what a great way to share, and re-use.
Thanks for all the interest and ideas – lots of kōrero about the idea of car/van shares in the neighbourhood. Anyone else keen on that? Might be time for us to approach Mevo or CityHop?

Ngaio Climate Crew member Bill Dashfield has tried to find a local recycling option for expanded polystyrene for four years- and now Mitre 10 Crofton Downs has become the first in the Wellington region to launch an expanded polystyrene takeback scheme!
Under this, members of the public can return polystyrene packaging from products bought at Mitre 10, which will then be remanufactured and used in polystyrene products stocked by Mitre 10, such as bean bag refills. This is a great move towards waste minimisation and it is so good to have this local recycling option. Way to go!
Read more about this achievement and hear from Bill and Ian on page 10 of the May 1st edition of the Independent Herald!

Buying just one garment second hand instead of new can drastically reduce your carbon footprint? It also saves huge amounts of water – like the 700 gallons needed to make a single cotton shirt – and keeps clothes out of landfills, where millions of tons of textile waste end up every year.
Not to mention the money you will save, alongside the unique, high quality and one of a kind pieces you can find when shopping second hand!
Every secondhand purchase helps conserve resources, lower pollution, and supports a circular economy that’s better for the planet. Choose wisely, shop sustainably, and make a real difference!
